Broadway

Up early-ish to finish packing & getting ready to leave for New Jersey. Adam's cousins arrived around 9am & we left maybe an hour later, packing the mustang with snacks & drinks & all out clothes etc. It was a long journey but I think what made it worse is the fact that the highways & interstates are all so boring & all look the same.

We stopped for lunch at a place called PizzaWorks in Old Saybrook, CT, & it was so close to the railway that the whole place rattled when a train thundered passed. There was a little modern model train set, all lights a-glow with moving things & running trains, on the first floor of the diner, & all the décor was set out with model trains & train memorabilia. We shared a pizza then headed back on the road. But because of the food & the previous driving, we were both struggling with tiredness so when Adam pulled into a services to fuel the car, I went in & bought a four pack of Red Bull for him & a iced macchiato from Dunkin' Donuts for me. A little while later, more awake, we hit traffic & I needed to pee after both the coke at the pizza place & the takeaway coffee, but there didn't seem to be any services so we headed into a town to a tourist information center but the public toilets were closed - anyway, long story short, I ended up going into a children's center! Back on the road & we didn't stop until we got to our hotel in New Jersey.

It's called the Embassy Suites, by the Hilton group, but the staff don't really seem to know what they're doing. It's a big hotel & we arrived around 3:30 but apparently our room wasn't ready so they offered us a smoking room instead, or to wait & come back in an hour. We chose to wait & headed out to have an early dinner; that way, we wouldn't have to worry about eating later when we went to see the show Adam had booked. We went to 'Outback Steak House', had dinner, & went back to the hotel. The woman behind the desk spent ages sorting out the info & room details, & had to take Adam's credit card twice. Because of all the faff, we were late leaving for Broadway.

Had the traffic been okay, we would have made it on time, but as it so happens the traffic was horrendous. The road systems are terrible - four lanes of traffic merging into one, not to mention all the cars trying to get on to the road too. There's a corner that is pretty much a U turn to join the road & large trucks were struggling because they had to wait for a bigger gap & two lanes to clear so they could swing round. Took us nearly two hours, then we had to park, find the theater, & get in. Because we had arrived late, we had to wait about ten minutes to be seated but were able to stand at the back of the theater & watch so we didn't miss too much. The show was awesome - really funny. I'm so glad Adam suggested it as I wouldn't have thought to go otherwise.

Afterwards, we headed to Times Square. I can't believe how hot it was still - I was sweating & I was wearing a spring dress; Adam had a suit on - complete with tie & hat! He did look very smart though & deals with the heat better than I do. It was busy in Times Square, which is to be expected, but it was still crazy trying to dodge everyone. Adam learned that I'm good at maneuvering through crowds! We popped into the Hard Rock Cafe store so I could buy a mug, then went to a Ben & Jerry's shop & got ice cream. I had Cherry Garcia because I love it so & we don't get it very often in the UK.
